how recipients are selected:
Referrals are often generated either by press releases to various media or by distributing applications to local municipalities, churches, social service organizations and community groups.
Once referrals are made and applications reviewed, homes are then inspected and evaluated by a professional home inspector or a skilled tradesperson. A determination is made as to whether each home meets eligibility criteria for volunteer renovation. Selection is ultimately based on need and available resources.
how the work gets done:
Once a home is accepted, a House Captain and House Liaison are assigned to each home. Care is taken to familiarize the homeowner with Rebuilding Together and provide the necessary reassurance that the scheduled work will be completed in ONE DAY and at NO COST to the homeowner. On Rebuilding Together Day, the House Captain, volunteers, skilled tradespeople and able-bodied homeowners work together as they paint, plaster, replace faulty locks, drafty windows and appliances and repair unsafe electrical wiring and plumbing.
